On Tuesday, Twitter?announced a usability update that will improve the social network's blocking and reporting systems. The update is set to roll out to all users over the next few weeks, but a small percentage has?already received it. In particular, the new changes?simplify how users file reports through Twitter's?mobile app by reducing the number of steps and requirements needed.

Twitter's post said the site?will also improve "the reporting process for those who observe abuse but aren't receiving it directly," which is an improvement from once requiring harassment victims to personally report any issues before the service would take action.

The update will be met with a?boost in staff and anti-harassment tools on Twitter's side, though the update didn't clarify how the site will process and sift through the typical deluge of fake and irrelevant reports on matters that don't break the service's rules.?At the very least, while users wait for Twitter to respond to legitimate reports, they can now take comfort in blocked users no longer being able to read tweets from your account—though, in the case of default public accounts, it would just be a matter of a blocked user logging out and loading a feed anonymously. Twitter didn't specify whether it would ever force users to log in to the service to read any posts on the site.

The news came?in the wake of heightened?harassment and "doxxing" attached to the GamerGate hashtag?in recent months. Complaints about Twitter's reporting and blocking tools have raged?for much longer than that, however, highlighted?in particular by an August 2013 change.org petition calling for Twitter to update its anti-harassment mechanisms. While Tuesday's?update addressed most of that petition's complaints, it didn't address one?way that?harassment and abuse?reaches affected users—namely, in the form of anonymous, brand-new accounts that can pop up and dump hateful speech and personal information directly into a user's "reply" feed. In those cases, the damage is typically done before Twitter can?verify reports and delete offending accounts, and the service has yet to roll out any way to block accounts that are, say,?newer than 30 days.

In a response to Ars, a Twitter representative pointed to a page on its support site that clarifies the service's?lack of IP-specific bans, which points out that "IP addresses are easy to change, and blocks can be easily circumvented by logging in from a different location, a third-party service, or one of many free websites or applications." That fact is a solid reminder that the site's?pledge to "improve the experience of people who encounter abuse on Twitter" will be?quite tough to fulfill.
